Works For Me - Organizing Toys

After you read this, leave a comment and head over to Rocks In My Dryer for more Works-For-Me Wednesday

A while back, I was constantly struggling to keep the house from looking like a tornado had come through the gir*ls' rooms. There were always so many toys all over the place.

I tried putting pictures on the bins, so they could put everything in it's place. Well, with three kids under 5 (at the time) they just couldn't do it, especially the 1-year old.

I tried incentives to pick it all up, but I felt like a cheerleader trying to motivate comatose players.

I realized we simply had too much stuff. We gave away what we could, if the kids didn't play with it much, but were always afraid Aunt Gertrude would ask us when she came to visit, "Where is that fire engine I gave Little Pea? You know, the one that that made all the noise?" You just can't give away those gifts that the family picked out so lovingly.

What I finally came up with may get me a few referrals to social services.

I took most of their toys away.

To the basement shelves, that is. We packed everything in sets or groups, and put them in plastic containers. We kept a few standards in their rooms, like the play kitchen, dress-ups, stuffed animals, Leaps*ters, and a few special things. They each get to choose one thing to bring up to their rooms. When they are done playing with it, they put it back in the bin, and exchange it in for another toy. It's sort of like a toy library or their own little toy store.

I'm not one that says everything must always be in place. You have to live in your house. And don't worry, toys seem to reproduce like rabbits around here, and we still have to work to keep everything picked up. But it's not nearly as bad as it used to be, and this mom is a lot less frustrated!

It works for me! What do you do to organize all your kids' stuff?

I've had to do this before, in fact I think we may be headed back to the toy check-out system

I'm afraid we need to do some serious toy purging as well. When I find myself saying, "Do not buy these children ANY more toys this year!" I know it's time to declutter. Ha!

Good encouragement to just do it!

Great tip - and they forget about the toys so they're constantly "new stuff" :)

Great tip! I have been trying to think of something to do with all of the larger toys that take up so much space - a check-out system may be just the thing...

I really like this "toy library" idea. I have been going nuts about how many toys there are. I'm constantly donating things, but there are so many things we can't donate. Great tips! I'm going to do this today.

I'm ready to do this with my kids, too. Thanks for sharing!

We boxed up a lot of my boys' toys and only keep out what can fit on one small bookshelf (except larger toys like play table, dump truck, etc). Then I have bins for the toys, one for blocks, one for stuffed animals, one for cars, and one for miscellaneous. Top shelf is for stuff that doesn't fit in a bin. This works great and my 3yr old knows what goes in each bin and can pick up his own toys. And it's not overwhelming since there aren't too many toys. I actually need to go through my boxes of toys and see which ones I can give away, and rotate a few to the shelves.

We have the toy bins too! I found that the kids enjoy their toys more when they are not as accessible.

I do something similar. I rotate my little one's toys so that there's always something "new," but there is less to get strung all over my house!

black plastic trash bags. nuff said, lol. nah, we had to do it for awhile where I took EVERYTHING away just because of her not cleaning up her room, ever. She just refused so we took it all. We have gradually given her back some of her toys but her room is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

Great ideas Sarah. Thanks for sharing!

That's a good idea! I do soemthing kinda like that. My kids like to be in the Family Room, so I rotate our toys down here each week. And, I have thinned out our toys upstairs immensely. It just feels cluttered to me with all of that junk that they don't even play with! MY kids play with their stuff MORE when they can actually find stuff. LOL!

Oh, I'm having a Target Gift Card GIve-Away, come on over and enter!

This is a great idea! I like how you refer to it as a library or store of sorts. It makes it seem more like a game for the kids!

Thanks for sharing.
