Beautiful Person, Beautiful Music: Corneille

As some of you know, I was a music major, and I’m a vocal coach, so I LOVE talking all things music. The best part is that I will NOT be reviewing kids’ music today! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love kids’ music, but every now and then, it’s great to put AWAY the Wiggles, the Doodle Bops, and yes – Miley Cyrus, too!

I am also a huge American Idol fan, for one main reason: I love how these young artists, people like you and me, can have a chance to shine and show their talent to the world! And I have a passion for promoting great artists!

Enter: Corneille! His first english language album, The Birth of Cornelius, is a breath of fresh air, and features intricate instrumental lines with relaxing lead melodies. Corneille’s smooth voice is reminiscent of Seal, Usher, and the magnificent Stevie Wonder combined. He effortlessly touches the ears- and the heart with his music. The passion heard in Corneille’s voice no doubt comes from his intense and inspirational life story.

Corneille Nyungura was born in Fribourg, Germany, where his parents were students. At the age of six, his family returned to Rwanda, their country of origin. But in 1994, Rwanda’s President Habyarimana was assassinated, and the largest, most horrific genocide in modern history claimed over 800,000 victims. Corneille’s parents and other family members were killed in the massacre. He alone managed to escape—first to Kinshasa, and then to Germany, where he was taken in by some family friends. Corneille stayed in Germany for three years before moving to Montréal—part of the North American world that had shaped his musical dreams, but still familiar for its French language.

This year marks the 50th anniversary for Mowtown Records, Corneille’s label. Mowtown made such an impact on oiur society over the years, and continues to this day!

My favorite songs on The Birth of Cornelius are the heart-tugging Foolish Heart, expressing feelings from his life story, and Home is By You, a sweet, lighthearted love song.

I loved this CD as well. I felt like he had invested so much of himself in the writing of it – you could just feel the emotion and sincerity. Home is By You is probably one of the most romantic songs I have ever heard!

  2. I totally agree! It’s a very emotional album!

  3. I really like Putamayo World Music, especially “Music from the Tealands”, but “Arabic Groove” is cool too! The new U2 album has really to my attention as well, they’ve gone back to some of their original sounds, and I like it!
