Friday’s Frugal Feast: Country Style Steak

Cube Steak is one of the most inexpensive cuts of meat, and until recently I’ve never had a recipe that I liked. And Country Fried Steak is another one of those Southern dishes this Italian girl NEVER would’ve imagined eating! I found this recipe on Southern Food, and loved it. I usually post my original recipes, or ones that I have modified, but this one is great just as it is! Here is an excerpt, and you can visit the site for the whole thing:

Country Style Steak


  • 1 pound round steak, cut into 4 portions, pounded to tenderize
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • salt
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cracker meal or crushed saltine crackers
  • 3 tablespoons shortening or oil
  • 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk

I made mine with regular milk, and it turned out fine. I’ve also substituted crushed Cheerios and Stuffing Mix for the cracker crumbs. Hey, you gotta use what you’ve got! Just call me McGyver… OK, maybe that’s going a little too far.
