Get Real: Local vs National Blogging, Monetization, Setting PR boundaries for Your Blog!

I knew it would happen sometime! While I try to mostly cover topics that pertain to women and moms in general, there are lots of hot-button issues in the blogosphere these days.

Last week, I disclosed that I’ve been blogging for three years, and most of the people there said, “Wow you’ve been around a long time!” Uh… OK? I guess I have, seeing as how the blogosphere is still so young. I do not have all the answers, but I’d like to open up the conversation and see what you all think! I come from the perspective of a medium-sized blog, and I think a lot of the speakers and experts in this field are uber-bloggers that we may or may not relate to.

What? You think I’m an uber-blogger? No? You said “uber-booger“? …oh.

Anyway, I’ve come into some situations where I’ve had to make decisions about what I feel comfortable doing on my blog, as far as PR, giveaways, ads, etc. Will I do a giveaway if the winner has to pay shipping? Will I pay for a review product up front and then get re-imbursed after the fact? How much real estate do I want to devote to PR? If I don’t accept an offer, am I missing out? Separate review blog? And then there’s the whole disclosure thing…

What are the best ways to monetize your blog? I’ve tried just about all of them, and I’d love to hear what’s working for you!

Lastly, what are the benefits of local blogging vs national blogging? I have a local blog, and a national blog, and I’d love to hear your questions and opinions about local blogs versus national. In some ways, I’ve been more successful in my local endeavors for various reasons. Many national bloggers I know are adding local components to their blogs, and what’s involved in that?

So Join me Thursday, September 10 at 1PM est/ 10AM pst at! Ask some questions, answer some questions and hopefully come away with some new ideas!

Also, I am thrilled to be nominated for Divine Caroline’s Love This Blog award! Here is where I shamelessly beg for votes, because, in the words of the great Sally Field, “You like, me! You really like me!” {tear drop}

I will try to be there – good topic! I must get a lot of housework done first though – and your show starts at 10 am for me!

  2. Melissa, Multi-Tasking Mama says:

Sounds like a great conversation! As long as the baby I watch is cooperative, I will be there =)

  3. I voted for my good friend today! I'll be there to see your smiling face 🙂

  4. Tiffany @ Lattes And Life says:

I agree that the public voices of bloggers aren't really representative of a great majority of us.

As far as monetizing my blog, I just don't do it. I didn't start blogging to make money. And I really don't feel like being bothered with all the paperwork and stuff that comes along with making money from my blog. I'm just not interested. And unless you're an Uber-Blogger, it doesn't seem worth the hassle, from what I hear people make off ads.

  5. Real Life Sarah says:

Yes, Tiffany, I can see where you're coming from. Sometimes it's not in your plan, and that's OK! We'll be talking about whether it's worth it, also.

  6. Mary @ Giving Up On Perfect says:

This might be a dumb question, but if I miss it live, can I watch it later?

  7. Carolina John says:

i am a total blog whore. i will accept and promote/review anything that anyone wants to send me. my blog is national, and most of my readers are in portland oregon and canada. Plus since it's a running/triathlon blog people send me running or triathlon stuff to try out. nutrition, gear, whatever. but i am not interested in monetizing my blog.

i would also say the point of view has to be personal no matter what your intended audience is. i post what pleases me up there and people read it because they like me and the way I write.

  8. to hear what you have to say…will be there!

  9. Sorry it didn't work out Sarah.. I'll be there next week when you do it again.
