Got Questions About Landscaping? Ask ‘Em Here

This MomTV Episode has already aired, and you can watch it below.  (I guarantee you will laugh- with us or at us) In this episode we give ideas for a variety container planter, growing herbs, managing hostas, drainage problems, and more!  Feel free to leave a question below, and we will try to get back to you!

Well, it has come to that exciting time of year when we come out of hibernation, and gather around our yards to make them pretty for the summer!

I am very blessed to have a husband who does landscaping! He is a teacher during the school year, and during the summers, he does landscape design and installation.  He is a very talented designer!  In fact, he is the one who usually arranges our furniture at home.  He has the spacial intelligence that I just don’t have.  I admire the way he can look at an empty space, and see what could be there.  I know what I like when I see it, but ask me to create it, and you’re asking for trouble.

If you’re like me, you are in luck this week! My wonderful husband Judd will be joining me on the GET REAL show on Wednesday at 8PM Eastern to answer all your landscaping questions, give tips, and design advice.  And if you’ve ever seen Judd and me interacting together, it can be a hoot! (We may have a special appearance from out “neighbors” Billy Peterbilt, and Shirley Ray- he he)

I’d love to have a few questions ahead of time, so we can prepare a few demonstrations, and research. So if you have a question about flowers, bushes, trees, design, walkways, retaining walls, or anything else landscaping, please ask it in the comments and we’ll cover it on Wednesday Night!

This is out landscaping at our old house.  I loved it!

Bonus Tip: Putting fake flowers in the ground so it looks like you are Gardener Extraordinaire will not fool anyone.  In fact, your neighbors will laugh at you behind your back.

Bonus Tip #2: Avoid using items such as old toilets or tires as planters.  Just say no.

I need ideas for a feature hill that is bare (I can send a photo if you like).
We have a small wall at the base of the hill where it connects to our driveway. I planted some winter creeper a few places and after 2 years, it’s starting to take off. Any other ideas, besides juniper (husband doesn’t like those)?

I think that my flame azalea has cancer. Where blooms should be, there are thick, bulbous, gnarled “things.” They look like tumors. They look disgusting. Eventually, they are turned a powdery white on the outside and then shrivel up. We have NO blooms this year, just these large (the size of a clementine)lumps. What’s up with this?

  3. Hi, I just planted rosemary and lavender in their own planter area. I used newspaper as a weed block and covered that with red cedar. Will that interfere with the plants I just put it?

Also, my rhubarb that I just transplanted looks like crap, all wilty and droopy. I’ve been watering it some but wonder if theres something else I can do?

Thanks for your help! (glad I saw this on twitter)

Girlee, I have a feeling it’s just too hot for your rhubarb to grow well. WHat is the avg temperature, and is it in sun or shade?

  4. I would love to know some good choices for a front bed. Plants that like the Mtns and actually stay green (other than evergreen trees). A few good, hardy choices that would be a good start. And do you know any that would plant and water themselves…even better!
