Keeping the Focus on Jesus at Easter

With all the Easter Egg hunts, bunnies and candy, sometimes the real reason for Easter can get lost. In our family, we don’t do Easter baskets, although the Grandmothers send wonderful presents. We don’t have egg hunts on Easter Day, but sometimes we do them before. We don’t believe the Easter Bunny is real, but we acknowledge the tradition.

The marketplace is so saturated with all these other things, though, that my kids have a hard time focusing on the real reason for Easter ~ Resurrection Day! It all about Jesus’ cruel death and glorious resurrection to pay the price for our shortcomings! Without His death and resurrection, our Christian faith would be meaningless.

Last year, I purchased Resurrection Eggs from Family Life, and I absolutely loved them! Resurrection Eggs take a secular Easter symbol- the colorful egg, and associate them with each part of the Passion story.

My kids love opening each egg, and finding the donkey Jesus rode into Jerusalem, or the coins that Judas received for betraying Jesus, the crown of thorns He wore, and lastly, the empty egg symbolizing the empty tomb!

If you’re looking for a way to transform the popular images of the season into reminders of Christ’s sacrifice, try it out!

That’s what works for me. How do you focus on Jesus during the Easter Season?

I have always planned to buy those, but never got around to it. I may do it this year, since the girls are old enough to really grasp the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice for us.
It is SO hard to keep a right perspective at this time of year, as well as Christmas. I make sure we have lots of Christian books about the holiday around our house, and we talk about the true story every day. And I just pray that every family member does not bombard us with gifts, lending to their idea that Easter is about chocolate and stuffed animals! :-)

Hi! I found your blog on Rocks In My Dryer. May I add 2 yummy ideas for you to try with your children?

    Resurrection Day Cookies
(These won’t work if it is very humid!)

    Resurrection Rolls

We love Psalm 34:8, which says, “O Taste and see that the Lord is good!”

I’ve just found something I will share with my girls after nap time:
Easter is for The Lamb of God

We will shop for 1/2-off stuffed animals on Monday, to add more sheep to our fold!

Embrace the cross, the Love and the Life of Jesus!

We use these, too, and just this morning I thought about posting about them for WFMW–I’m glad somebody (you) did!

By the way, I went through all four gospels looking at the storyline and thought it might be interesting to get a bigger egg carrier (the 18 egg kind from the grocery) and add a few more for other elements. Maybe I’ll post about my ideas tomorrow. I just think the kids have so much fun opening those eggs, we might as well add a few and add to the fun!

The lady that does our children’s Sunday School assembly uses these, and I agree, they are wonderful!

I have glanced at these before, but hadn’t really taken the time to ever look at them. Perhaps they are something that I should check out.

We also don’t really focus on the Easter bunny, thought we do baskets. But, we have told the kids before that we went shopping for the things in the basket. I have such fond memories as a young child of trying to find where my Mom hid my Easter basket, so it’s a fun tradition for us.

But, like you, we try to focus on the true reason for Easter.

My kids made those in Sunday school. I didn’t know you could buy them. Sometimes I think I live under a rock LOL!

    Thanks for the post! :-)

When I was growing up we would always make a banner the night before that said Happy Resurrection Day and He is Risen. We would decorate by hanging them up and different balloons, etc. My parents would do one big basket and give us clues about where to find the basket and we had to work together. We always knew it was from them though. Good idea about the Resurrection Eggs.
