I prefer a full table, because I know the days are coming (soon) when they will be empty. For now, my dining table takes the hit, usually with one or two laptops open and a pile of papers (i.e., tax stuff at the moment, yuck!). We try to keep the kitchen table free and clear, however.

the first thing that comes to my mind is the song "empty chairs at empty tables"- That being said, an empty table at my house means i'm in a good, organized on top of it place in my life. empty chairs are what make me sad. whether the chairs are empty because a family member has passed on, or because the chair belongs to a struggling teenager, or simply a sign that the family is too busy to share a meal together.- those are what make me sad.

right now- my kitchen table is a fort- covered with blankets and there are pillows and more blankets under it. there's also a small projector and a dvd player so the kids can watch a movie in their fort.

I am so like you when it comes to this! On my table right now is my purse, school pictures, a bunch of papers the kids were coloring on, markers and pencils everywhere, coloring books, a bowl and two cups I have not put away yet. Oh and my calendar that I must update today! Yea we are definitely lived in and I am absolutely not organized! LOL. But I am like you and would rather have the mess than not have the mess! Amen! :)

Anyone who has an empty table has their life way more together than I have mine! Our table is constantly multitasking...meals, homeschool, art projects, etc. I feel like I'm always clearing it off to put something else on it.

The one thing I don't put on my table is junk mail. That sits on top of my girls' play kitchen on the other side of the room. :)

My table is always full of something! I don't even try to get it empty, anymore, except after everyone is in bed. It's where we do everything from eating, to school work, to socializing. An empty table means someone is sick or we're away from home.

That is so funny! Sometimes I wish I was OCD... just a little, so stuff would get done :)

You would NOT want to see my laundry/utility room right now, either!

I have a touch of OCD. An empty table means that my my daughter did some crafts (with tons of newspaper laying on the table) and I cleaned up 13 seconds after she was finished. Same with any meals.

It's a sickness. But I will admit that my laundry/storage room is a MESS!

Congrats on your clean table :)

Wonderful thoughts, Sarah.

To me, the person who has an empty table is one who doesn't get any snail mail, because that is what is usually covering any flat surface in our house! But seriously, I agree with you that I would rather have the mess than option #3. My home may be cluttered, but it is a HOME, where my family lives. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
