A little while ago, I posted about a contest going on at Disney’s www.family.com. Kraft Singles is looking for the “Single Best Town in America!” Hundred of entries came in, and they were whittled down to just 10 finalists.
I wrote about why the High Country of NC is the best place in America, (hint: it involves a 7-foot Wooly Worm)remember this?

And I’m proud to say that a town from North Carolina made the Top 10! So of course I voted for Gastonia, NC! Here is a little snippet of what makes Gastonia so special:
This town has pulled together to help give a “hand up” to our hurting neighborhoods. It started with a conversation between two local pastors and a vision to fix up a few houses & give out some food. What it turned into was nothing short of amazing! 20+ churches, fire & police depts, non-profits, The City of Gastonia, our mayor, local businesses and over 1000 volunteers make up Hope 4 Gaston.
Some more of the fun entries are:
- Bell Buckle, TN, with a 40×50 foot quilt painted on the pavement.
- Richmond, MI actually has town-wide outhouse races, and a day dedicated to driving your John Deere tractor to school.
- Twinsburg, OH is home to the largest annual gathering of Twins in the WORLD! (This mention is dedicated to Janine (@Twincident) and Carolina Mama!)
The winning town will receive a Block Party from Kraft Singles, featuring a concert by up and coming country band Love and Theft. They’ll also have an appearance by ABC soap stars. Little known fact: in High School and a little in college, I was hooked on ABC soaps. Is there anyone left who remembers Luke and Laura?
But why should the winning town get all the prizes??
Kraft Singles is giving away TWO $125 Amex Gift Cards to TWO Real Life Readers!
- To enter the giveaway, go vote for your Single favorite town of the ten semifinalists then come on back to tell me (in a comment) what your Single best afternoon looks like in your own hometown. I’ll be picking a winner from the comments here at random.” (Click Here to vote)
- For an extra entry, write a Tweet or about the contest, and leave the link in a comment HERE. To get the link to your Twitter status, right click the date/time stamp and “copy link.” Here is an example of what you could tweet:

You have to register for Disney’s www.family.com in order to vote, but in my experience, the site is very trustworthy, and will not spam you with unwanted emails!!
The giveaway will be open to US RESIDENTS only through March 23, and the winner will be chosen by random drawing and announced March 24 by email.

Disclosure: I have partnered with KRAFT Foods to help promote the “Single Best Town” in America program. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program, which includes writing about my own hometown experiences and hosting a giveaway where the prize has been provided by KRAFT Singles. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

I had to cast my vote for Twinsburg, OH and Twins Day..my father, while not a twin, was a huge Twins Day supporter. Even after he moved from the area, he and my stepmother flew back to Twinsburg from Florida so he could judge the Twins Day annual contest. He passed away a few years ago but was honored with a plaque for his dedication to Twinsburg and Twin Day.
An afternoon in my hometown (Parma, OH)features plenty of polka music and pierogis as well as a trip downtown to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right on the shores of beautiful Lake Erie.

Cast my vote for Gastonia!
My favorite afternoon consists of sipping a cold Coca-Cola while sitting on my front porch swing, watching my kids playing. Love it!

I just cast my vote for Gastonia because anytown in NC is awesome!
Now, a perfect afternoon in my hometown (this is the first time I’ve referred to Boone, NC as that) is breakfast at the Daniel Boone Inn, a crazy day at Tweetsie with the kids, dinner on my backdeck- listening to the creek and watching the sunset.

An afternoon with the kids in our hometown is best spent at the Tot Lot or walking on the Greenway! Oh how I’m aching for some sunshine

In my hometown, the single best afternoon involves walking down the main street and stopping in Nielsen’s Frozen Custard – they have the best frozen custard/yogurt/ice cream in town!

Voted for Hamburg, NY (I’m from NJ, so I gotta support the Northeast)
Best day around here is usually the day/evening of the town fireworks for Independence Day. We can see them from our yard, so we host a big BBQ with all our friends!

I voted for Gastonia, NC, and the single best afternoon in Wayne, NJ is grabbing a Starbucks at any of the three in town, walking around one of the many lakes, and having a nice meal at Bahama Breeze.

I voted for Gastonia, of course. I’ve never even heard of the others. My single best afternoon would (WILL) be taking my kids out to any of our nice little parks full of shining happy children, having a picnic, and maybe running away by myself and leaving them to harass their father for a few hours. Ah, peace and sunshine!

BTW … my favorite way to spend an afternoon in our little hometown is to take the boys and go to the kids park. The park was designed with kids of all ages in mind and it’s built in memory of a local little boy who lost his precious life in a daycare fire. You can feel the love of children every time you go to the park and the boys love playing there … especially in the summer when they have the water fountains open!

Our little town of Clewiston in the heart of the Florida Everglades is called the sweetest town in America ….we grow a lotta sugar. Our best afternoon is spent lazing on the banks of a canal with a cool beverage in one hand and a fishin’ pole in the other, catching fish and listening to country music. So peaceful, quiet and serene – a body can even hear himself think.

An afternoon in my town consists of kids of all ages playing outdoors in front of their homes, parks and walking around town. People love to be outdoors, you can go to either the parks, the beach or the boardwalk, great choices!

I voted for North Carolina…Cuz I just love everything about it there! An ideal afternoon in my hometown of Sarasota, Florida would be a beautiful day at the beach followed by a fresh seafood dinner in Siesta Key Village!

I voted for Augusta, GA. My best afternoon would include a trip to a local ice cream shop that just happens to be one of the very best ice cream shops that I’ve ever been to.

My town is quintessential New England… we have a beautiful town green right in the center. My perfect afternoon, no matter the season, involves the green. In Spring, the dogwoods bloom and sway in the breeze making for a perfect place to settle with a good book (or a couple wiggly preschoolers!). In Summer, it’s a lovely spot to spread a blanket and have a picnic. In Fall, we go for brisk walks and crunch the leaves. In Winter, it is lined with gorgeous trees and the whole town gathers to sing Christmas carols together… so special!

I’m still having a tough time calling where I live “my hometown” since I’ve not been here that long, but I would have to say that my favorite day would be to get up in the morning and take the kids to Carowinds, ride some rides, and then go to the waterpark. When we get tired, we come home, eat some lunch, and go to the pool for the rest of the day. I still miss the beach in Charleston, but this almost makes up for it!

I like the A Stitch in Time semi-finalist! In my town during the Spring, being by the lake is gorgeous and beautiful. Sometimes I get ice cream from a homemade ice cream shop and then go sit by the water and enjoy the sun, the scenery, and the scent of fresh flowers. I also like to feed the ducks

I voted for Bell Buckle, TN. I have been there and it is a great place. The Bell Buckle cafe has great food too.
A great day in my hometown is the Christmas walk. All the shops have treats and specials. In the evening the tree lighting ceremony is fantastic.
In the fall we have hometown days with fireworks, a craft show and music.

I had to cast my vote for Colorado Springs since that was my hometown for awhile and I still have dear friends there. A perfect afternoon HERE looks a bit different than in CO. Here, we’d be dodging rainstorms, ambling thru Mast General Store, hiking on the parkway….Boone is a great place to live!
