Weigh-In Wednesday: The Unwanted Visitor

Well, this week, I have been plagued with a common female affliction that needs no introduction. I’ll only tell you that it starts with a P, ends with an S, and has an M in the middle. Do you need another hint?

Anyway… I hopped on my Wii Fit this week, and was unpleasantly surprised to see an extra pound on my Mii! When the Wii Fit asks you why you gained weight, it really needs to have an option for PMS! Ooops, there, I said it.

So I decided to do some research on how to minimize weight gain and water retention during PMS. I’ll share a little of what I found.

According to Health A to Z:

  • Eat complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain breads, pasta and cereals, fiber and protein. Cut back on sugar and fat.
  • Avoid salt for the last few days before your period to reduce bloating and fluid retention.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

(I think my tortilla chips and cheese would really miss me!)

According to Ezine Articles:

Food cravings can be managed by getting adequate sleep, eating smaller and more frequent meals, limiting caffeine intake, staying well hydrated, and doing at least some exercise. Reducing salt intake in the last few days before one’s period can help minimize bloating and fluid retention. Calcium supplements may also help reduce bloating and other PMS symptoms.

So, basically we have to avoid refined carbs, drink plenty of water, and limit caffeine and salt. Exactly the opposite of my instincts when PMS rears it’s ugly head. I’m going to try to do better next time, and see if the improvement I feel offsets the lack of will-power!

However! I do have some good news! I almost got to 2000 in the 6-minute Hula Hoop! 12 more spins! It almost killed me, though. Maybe I can do it on Saturday for theCool Mom Guide to Fitness Wii Fit Olympics. The Olympics take place in the Cool Mom Guide to Fitness Forums on Saturday, Feb 28! Start training now!

AND… I thought I would never beat Julie’s Soccer Score from when she came to visit me. She is the Soccer champion, and actually has gotten a perfect score! But, I rocked the soccer balls this week and beat her!

I have found a few more Weigh-In Wednesdays that seem to be independent of each other; it seems good ideas are not always original! So I figured I’d link to all of them and try to bring everyone together! You can sign the Mr. Linky here, and then go visit the other Weigh-In-Wednesday posts at these blogs:

  1. I’m sorry, but the salty popcorn and sweet chocolate bars call too loudly to me in that dreaded week! Just hang in there, though, it will be gone next week! πŸ™‚

  2. Hey, thanks for linking to me! I haven’t stepped on the scale yet this morning, and honestly I’m afraid to. Ahhh, why is it so hard!!! I’m getting more and more jealous about the Wii Fit because it looks like so much fun and a good weigh to shed pounds. We don’t have a tv so I have no way to use it. They need to make a version that will hook to the computer!

Anyway, I’ll be back later to sign the Mr Linky when I make my post. Thanks again for the link, and I’m happy to have found a new weight-loss-buddy! πŸ™‚

  3. True, there is that ugly little weight gain associated with PMS, but I have found that there can be an upside to that time of the month. If I am exercising regularly and watching my diet, I lose MORE weight during that week than I do other times of the month. Just keep pushing and hopefully you will get that little bonus, too.

  4. I started my own last week, and I had no idea there were other “Weigh-In Wednesday’s” out there. Thanks for getting us to join up!

  5. I had the same problem last week. This week the Fit told me I was being unhealthy dropping 3.5 lbs before my deadline. It’s lucky my PMS is gone! πŸ˜‰

I just did 10 min hula hoop yesterday for the 2nd time – I’m so proud of myself! And my son – totally jealous!

  6. thanks for linking up one weigh at a time. πŸ™‚ i’m going to check out all the other links, too.

  7. Thanks for linking to my Blog. I really need to get the Wii Fit.. I just have the Wii Sports..and the Juilian Michaels game. Losing weight is sooo hard!!! lol

  8. oww I think that was my problem the week before last…I swear my weight was all over the place.

The other day I got on and it said I lost almost 5 lbs…yeah right..then the next day I gained 2…and it asked me why…there were no spots for “you caught me on a good day the time before”. I hate when it asks everytime.

We got our Wii Fit on Friday and I have been faithfully “playing” with it for at least 45 minutes a day. I think this post is funny because I, as well, just got an unwelcome visitor and said this to my friend Becky last night: ‘So, in how many months will the Wii Fit figure out that every month at this time my weight goes up a bit?”

  10. Lisa @ Stop and Smell the Chocolates says:

That weight will come right off later, so don’t worry!

Excellent job on the Wii Fit!! I’m going to be checking out the Olympics, but have a feeling I can’t compete – still a beginner with the Wii Fit. But at least it will give me some goals to try and achieve or beat!
