December 21, 2010: Solstice Lunar Eclipse

Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. “Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21,” says Chester. “Fortunately we won’t have to wait 372 years for the next one…that will be on 2094 DEC 21.”

Great ShoT, I thought it was pretty cool that it was on the same night as the solstice.

Great comparison! We didn’t even know about the eclipse – we had celebrated our 6th anniversary and collapsed after our trip! congratulations!

  3. This is a great shot. I took one with my phone at 3am and the moon is smaller than a pea. When I woke back up at 6am, the moon was so bright it lit up my whole house. So mysterious and beautiful.
